Misery Ridge Trail

Last week! After visiting my friends Dolores and Dennis, per their suggestion, I embarked on an incredible adventure at Smith Rock State Park near Redmond, Oregon.

You can see some of the photos I took during the hike throughout this post, including climbers on Monkey Face and other iconic rock walls that make this place so unforgettable.

I followed the Misery Ridge Summit Trail loop going counterclockwise, a route that offered both challenge and awe-inspiring scenery.

The initial climb up Misery Ridge was steep and intense, but reaching the top felt like a personal triumph. From the summit the views were absolutely breathtaking. In the distance I could see the snow-covered peaks of the Three Sisters mountains standing tall and serene against the clear Oregon sky. It was humbling to take in the vast high desert landscape, shaped long ago by volcanic forces.

As I continued the loop the trail hugged the cliffs, and I was rewarded with a close view of Monkey Face, the iconic spire that attracts climbers from all over the world. Watching the climbers ascend its vertical face was a true delight. Their skill, determination, and trust in one another was inspiring, and it reminded me of the power of community and courage. I stood for a while just taking it all in, admiring the daring climbs, the strength of the rock, and the silence broken only by the wind and the occasional bird call.

Above me a vulture glided in wide circles, its wings stretched out as it rode the thermal currents. I kept my ears open for the telltale sound of rattlesnakes, reminding myself that this beautiful terrain is also wild and alive. The Crooked River winding below added to the magic, reflecting the light as it snaked through the canyon floor.

The entire trail loop offered a changing perspective of the rock formations and surrounding landscape. Each turn revealed something new—jagged cliffs, massive walls, golden light painting the tuff and basalt in deep warm tones. The trail eventually led me to the top of the Misery Ridge, which I completed in full, taking my time to absorb the views and reflect on the journey.

What makes Smith Rock even more fascinating is its geology. Around thirty million years ago a massive volcanic eruption caused a caldera to collapse, forming layers of compressed volcanic ash known as tuff. Later, basalt lava flows covered much of the area, and over time the Crooked River carved its way through the rock, shaping the dramatic cliffs and spires we see today. It is a living monument to the earth’s powerful history and transformation.

Smith Rock is not just a hiking destination—it is a place of wonder where geology, adventure, and solitude come together. Whether you are a climber, a hiker, a wildlife watcher, or simply a lover of the outdoors, this park offers something special. For me, it was a day of physical effort, quiet reflection, and deep appreciation for the landscape that surrounded me.

If you ever get the chance to visit, take the Misery Ridge loop counterclockwise, start early to beat the crowds, and let yourself be fully present with every step. Smith Rock will stay with you long after the trail ends.
