It became a week filled with friendship, history, laughter, food, beautiful scenery, and those simple moments that often become our most treasured memories. I have to begin by thanking my dear friend Sandy, who was a wonderful host and, perhaps even more importantly, my connection to the real Mackinac Island. Sandy is well known on the island and has contributed over the years to its events, arts, trails, and community. Through her, I did not experience Mackinac simply as a visitor. I was welcomed into a community. My arrival could not have been more appropriate. After stepping off the ferry, there was Sandy waiting for me with a horse taxi, reminding me immediately that I had arrived somewhere very different.
